The Art School is a program for studio and on-location art instruction that offers a wide range of classes and workshops for people of all ages and abilities throughout the year. The Art School also offers Birthday parties for children. Call 948-5364 for more information.

The Girl With Red Hair, an oil on canvas by Robert Henri, was acquired by The Arts & Crafts Club in 1907 as the first piece of a permanent collection for the community of Spartanburg. From that beginning, the museum’s collection has grown to over 400 pieces of art and sculpture.

Many fine artists from the Upstate region of South Carolina are featured in the collection, including August Cook, Margaret Law, Josephine Sibley Couper, and Grace DuPre. The collection also features paintings, sculpture, and ceramics by contemporary artists from this region.

An extension of the Art School, this program is offered each summer for children ages 6 though 12. Each session is made up of different classes, each exploring some theme or subject in art.

Art School information may akways be found on the Art School's Summer Term brochure.

It is our goal for the Spartanburg County Museum of Art to grow into a cultural and artistic hub for artists and residents of the Upstate and the Southeast. Artists understand that their art reflects the culture in which it is created.

Here in Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina we are fortunate to have a rich history that is a culmination of many different cultures. As we move forward into the future with and through the creation of new artwork, The Museum has sought ways to remind area artists of the rich history that is a part of their creative foundation.

It is important to understand that The Museum does not intend to limit submissions to this competition to any historic theme. The Museum wishes only to pay tribute to the individuals on whose shoulders we stand, and to revisit the events of yesteryear solely for the purpose of providing a context for our future.

Your membership will help to support art school classes, workshops & camps for children & adults, exhibitions by local, regional and national artists, an art lecture series, docent tours for students & adults, outreach art programs for at-risk youth, a growing permanent collection of artwork for the community.

As a non-profit organization, the museum relies not only on financial contributions from the private sector, but also upon its volunteerism. If you are interested in helping us install exhibitions in our galleries, helping us with mailings or any number of other projects, please let us know either by e-mailing us below or by calling us at 582-7616.
